LLS Woman of the Year Candidate Hosts Fashion for a Cause in Washington DC!

Model Q in House of Rossil Designs (houserossil.com)

On Thursday Night May 5th 2011, Model Q was featured in a fashion show for the the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Check out the full story below!

Sanam Toossi continued her campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) Woman of the Year last night through an evening filled with fashion, fun and charity. Toossi hosted a fashion show called “Fashion for a Cause” at Josephine’s in Washington D.C.

The event was sponsored by NOVA Fashion Week and featured lots of spring dresses and other spring looks by DC fashion designer House Rossil and up and coming student designer Samuel Ugglee.

All of the proceeds of the event went to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Toossi’s goal is to raise $100,000 for the cause and last night’s fashion show was one of several fundraising events to reach her goal.

After the show, Toossi introduced a special guest to the audience, Kasey Farrell. Farrell is mother to the Girl of the Year, Molly Farrell. Molly was diagnosed with Pre-B Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in April 2009 at the age of 4. The family battled against the cancer, and they feel incredibly blessed that she has been healthy ever since the extensive treatment. Kasey explained that they would never have been able to get through the struggle without the research and support of LLS.

BET held it’s second annual “Leading Women Defined” Summit in D.C. on March 15-17th at the Four Seasons in Georgetown. The summit, according to it’s password protected Web site, is “a special gathering of approximately 100 strategic thought leaders representing a cross-section of areas impacting the Black community.”

This year’s summit honored Susan Taylor, former editor of ESSENCE and founder of National CARES Mentoring Movement, at the Dorothy Height luncheon on Tuesday.

The summit also included panels with inspiration Black women such as producer Mara Brock Akil, poet Sonia Sanchez, NAACP’s Chairman Roslyn M. Brock, poet/author Ntozake Shange, Star Jones and editor-in-chief of Ebony Amy DuBois Barnett. Panelists also included actresses Tichina Arnold, Tatyana Ali, Nicole Ari Parker, Tracee Ellis Ross and Boris Kodjoe.

Still, among the high powered women, legendary actress Cicely Tyson apparently “stole the show”:

Tyson took the mic and told an indignant story about how, after everything she’s done in her career, she was recently asked to do a screen test to prove her talent — and then she still didn’t get the job.

But then, “it’s not what people do to you, it’s what you let them do to you,” Tyson said. “You have your own power and you have to execute it.
